Saju vs BaZi vs Western Astrology: What Is the Difference?
If you search for Saju in English you will quickly meet two neighbours: BaZi and Western astrology. One of them is the same system under another name. The other is a different idea altogether.
Saju and BaZi: one system, two names
BaZi (八字) is Chinese for “eight characters”. Saju (四柱) is Korean for “four pillars”. They describe the same chart: four pillars, each made of a heavenly stem and an earthly branch, eight characters in all. The calendar rules, the five elements, and the harmonies and clashes are shared. In Japan the same system is called Shichū Suimei (四柱推命).
A correctly built Saju chart and a correctly built BaZi chart for the same birth are identical. The differences are in practice:
- Language and terms. Korean readings use Korean pronunciations, such as Gap for 甲 where Mandarin says Jiǎ, and Korean names for concepts.
- Time conventions. Some Korean practitioners adjust hour boundaries by thirty minutes for the gap between Korean clock time and solar time in Seoul.
- Cultural setting. In Korea, Saju is woven into New Year fortunes, compatibility checks before marriage, and choosing names and dates.
Saju and Western astrology: different foundations
| Saju | Western astrology | |
|---|---|---|
| Based on | Calendar cycles of stems and branches | Positions of the sun, moon and planets |
| Main identity | Day master, from the exact day | Sun sign, from a roughly month-long range |
| Number of types | 10 day masters; 60 day pillars | 12 sun signs |
| Elements | Five: wood, fire, earth, metal, water | Four: fire, earth, air, water |
| Year marker | 12 animals, changing at Ipchun | None |
| Birth time gives | The hour pillar | The rising sign and houses |
| Birthplace matters | Slightly, through the time zone | Strongly, for the rising sign |
The two systems share one word, “element”, but mean different things by it. Western elements are fixed temperaments. Saju elements are phases that feed and restrain each other in a cycle, so a reading is about relationships between them.
Is the “Chinese zodiac” the same thing?
The twelve-animal zodiac is one small piece of Saju: the branch of the year pillar. Reading only the animal is like reading only a sun sign. A full chart has eight characters, and two people born in the same animal year usually have very different charts.
Which is more accurate?
None of them has scientific support as a way to predict personality or events. They are best treated as cultural traditions and as a shared language for talking about people. On that basis Saju offers a lot of detail to play with, and you can explore yours from the home page or start with what Saju is.
