What is Saju?

Saju (사주, “four pillars”) turns the year, month, day and hour of a birth into eight characters. Each character belongs to one of five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal or water. The stem of your day pillar is your “day master”, the character that stands for you.

Yang and Yin. Every element comes in two forms. Yang is the big, bold, outward version. Yin is the soft, subtle, inward version. Fire, for example, is the blazing sun as Yang and a single candle as Yin. Neither is better; they are two styles of the same energy. So a “Yang Fire” day master is the sun, and a “Yin Fire” day master is the candle.

Gunghap (궁합) is the Korean tradition of comparing two charts. This site looks at how your day masters relate, whether your day and year branches harmonise or clash, and whether each chart supplies elements the other is missing.
