The Five Elements in Saju: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water

The five elements (오행, 五行, ohaeng) are the vocabulary of Saju. Every character in a chart belongs to one of them, and a reading is mostly a description of how they interact. A better translation than “elements” is “phases”: they describe kinds of movement, not substances.

What each element stands for

ElementSeasonMovementAssociated qualities
🌳 Wood (목, 木)SpringGrowing upwardGrowth, ambition, kindness, directness
🔥 Fire (화, 火)SummerSpreading outwardPassion, expression, warmth, visibility
⛰️ Earth (토, 土)Between seasonsHolding steadyStability, trust, patience, care
⚔️ Metal (금, 金)AutumnDrawing inwardPrecision, principle, decisiveness
🌊 Water (수, 水)WinterFlowing downwardWisdom, adaptability, intuition

The generating cycle

Each element feeds the next: wood feeds fire, fire creates earth (ash), earth bears metal, metal carries water, and water nourishes wood. In a chart or between two people, this is the supportive relationship. The element that feeds you is your resource; the element you feed is your output.

The controlling cycle

Each element also restrains another: wood breaks up earth, earth dams water, water puts out fire, fire melts metal, and metal cuts wood. This is not “bad”. Control is how a chart keeps a strong element from running wild, and in compatibility it reads as tension and spark rather than calm.

Reading the balance

Count the elements among the eight characters. An element that appears three or four times dominates the chart. An element that does not appear at all is “missing”, and tradition says people are drawn to what they lack: someone with no water may be attracted to water-heavy people, places or work.

This is why our compatibility score includes an “element balance” part. It checks whether each chart supplies the elements the other is missing.

Idols by core element

Here is how the idols on this site divide by the element of their day master:

Saju is a cultural tradition, and this site treats it as entertainment. There is no scientific evidence that a birth chart determines personality or predicts the future.
