Yin and Yang in Saju: What “Yang Fire” and “Yin Fire” Mean

If you have looked at a Saju chart, you will have seen labels such as “Yang Wood” or “Yin Water”. The second word is the element. The first word tells you which of its two forms it takes. Yin and Yang (음양, 陰陽, eumyang) are the oldest idea in the system: everything has an outward, active side and an inward, receptive side.

Two forms of the same element

Yang (陽) is the large, obvious, outward version of an element. Yin (陰) is the small, refined, inward version. Neither is stronger or better. Traditional Saju teaches them through images:

ElementYang form (陽)Yin form (陰)
🌳 Wood甲 Gap: the tall tree乙 Eul: the climbing vine
🔥 Fire丙 Byeong: the sun丁 Jeong: the candle flame
⛰️ Earth戊 Mu: the mountain己 Gi: the garden soil
⚔️ Metal庚 Gyeong: the raw iron辛 Sin: the polished jewel
🌊 Water壬 Im: the ocean癸 Gye: the morning rain

The sun and a candle are both fire. The sun lights everything without choosing; a candle lights one room and draws people close. That is the difference between a Yang Fire and a Yin Fire day master in one picture.

How it shows up in a reading

Yin and Yang in compatibility

The five classic stem pairs in gunghap always join one Yang stem with one Yin stem, such as Yang Wood with Yin Earth. The idea is that opposite polarities lock together, which is why those pairs earn the highest “core element” score on this site.

Which are you?

Your polarity comes from your day master, the stem of your day pillar. Enter your birthday on the home page and the result shows it, for example “Yin Water”. The day master guide describes all ten types.

Saju is a cultural tradition, and this site treats it as entertainment. There is no scientific evidence that a birth chart determines personality or predicts the future.
